Perfectly Planned Ceremony

Word of welcome

Good afternoon. My name is _____ and I have the privilege of conducting this marriage ceremony today.

On behalf of [Partner 1] and [Partner 2], welcome. They are delighted that you are here to share in their joy during this wonderful moment in their lives.

By your presence, you celebrate with them the love they have discovered in each other, and you support their decision to commit themselves to one another for the rest of their lives.

Address to the couple

[Partner 1] & [Partner 2], marriage begins long before the wedding day and continues well beyond the ceremony. While a moment and a signature create the legal bond, it takes a lifetime of love, commitment, and friendship to make it everlasting.

Today, you unite as husband and wife/marriage partners, blending your lives, expanding family ties, and embarking on a new adventure. This next chapter is yours to write. May you always confide in, laugh with, and support each other, sharing both joy and quiet peace.

Nurture a love that builds each other up and makes you better people. Though the path of love isn’t always easy, it is through challenges that your bond will grow strong.

Expression of intent and consent

I have some questions for each of you.

[Partner 1], you have chosen [Partner 2] to be your wife/husband/partner. Do you promise to love and respect her/him/them? To be honest with her/him/them always, and to stand by her/him/them through whatever may come? (Answer: 'I do')

[Partner 2], you have chosen [Partner 1] to be your husband/wife/partner. Do you promise to love and respect him/her/them? To be honest with him/her/them always, and to stand by him/her/them through whatever may come? (Answer: 'I do')

Affirmation of family and friends (optional)

In the spirit of joy and affirmation, I want to ask your families and friends a question:

Do you, the families and friends of [Partner 1] and [Partner 2], give them your blessing and support, wishing them a wonderful life together? (All answer: ‘We do’)

Reading

This is a reading from Les Misérables by Victor Hugo that expresses some thoughts on love.

You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving. The great acts of love are done by those who are habitually performing small acts of kindness. We pardon to the extent that we love. Love is knowing that even when you are alone, you will never be lonely again. And the greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved. Loved for ourselves. And even loved in spite of ourselves.

Or

This is an excerpt from the novel Wild Awake by Hilary T Smith that reveals a truth about love.

People are like cities: We all have alleys and gardens and secret rooftops and places where daisies sprout between the sidewalk cracks, but most of the time all we let each other see is a postcard glimpse of a skyline or a polished square. Love lets you find those hidden places in another person, even the ones they didn’t know were there, even the ones they wouldn’t have thought to call beautiful themselves.

Personal story (optional)

Before [Partner 1] and [Partner 2], say their vows today, they have asked to share a little of their personal story with you.

(While not mandatory, you may wish to share with your guests a brief insight into who you are as a couple, what brought you to this point and/or what this day means to each of you. It can be funny, quirky, heartfelt, about how you met, memorable moments - anything you'd like to share with family & friends. This can be read by you, a guest reader, or by your officiant.)

Exchange of vows

(Couples are encouraged to select or write their own vows. We offer the selection below as an option.)

[Partner 1] and [Partner 2], we now come to your vows. These promises that you make today must be renewed tomorrow and each day that stretches out before you.

You have chosen/written special words for each other. [Partner 1], please go ahead.

[Partner 2], I promise you these things:
I will laugh with you in times of joy, and comfort you in times of sadness or fear
I will listen to you with understanding
I will speak to you with encouragement
I will believe in your dreams, and support your goals
I will help you when you need it, and step aside when you don't
I will respect and honour you always
I will love you for all of my life.

Thank you. [Partner 2], it’s your turn.

[Partner 1], I promise you these things:
I will laugh with you in times of joy, and comfort you in times of sadness or fear
I will listen to you with understanding
I will speak to you with encouragement
I will believe in your dreams, and support your goals
I will help you when you need it, and step aside when you don't
I will respect and honour you always
I will love you for all of my life.

Giving and receiving of rings

In a moment you will exchange rings. They are unbroken circles, having no end, and they celebrate the enduring and unending love you have for each other.

May we have the rings, please?

[Partner 2], please repeat after me:

[Partner 1], I give you this ring; wear it with love and joy
Let it be a constant reminder that we are partners
And that I am with you always.

[Partner 1], please repeat after me:

[Partner 2], I give you this ring; wear it with love and joy
Let it be a constant reminder that we are partners
And that I am with you always.

Your wedding rings will be a daily reminder of the commitments you have made today and a symbol to the world of your devotion.

Affirmation of the marriage

May the love which has brought you together continue to grow and enrich your lives.

May you meet with courage the problems which arise to challenge you and may you face them as a team.

May the happiness you share today be with you always.

Declaration of the marriage

[Partner 1] and [Partner 2], we have heard your promises, made before these witnesses, to share your lives in marriage. Therefore, by the power vested in me by the Province of XXX, it is my honour to now declare you to be husband and wife/married/partners for life.

You may seal your vows with a kiss!
